** This post was written by our Resident Fae Witch, Jen! We hope you enjoy this insight into what it's like to be a witch living with chronic illness and how she combats the fibro pains.** Chronic illness sucks. Full stop. There’s no other way to sum it up neatly. Life as a Spoonie is messy, a daily struggle against an illness that no one seems to really understand. You’re exhausted all of the time, getting a diagnosis is a literal nightmare, and you deal with constant and mysterious symptoms that seem to multiply like rabbits. I get it -- I’ve struggled with fibromyalgia and chronic pain for years, along with the constant stream of BS that comes with it. There might not be a cure for Fibro, but that doesn’t mean there aren’t things I can do to alleviate the daily pain and stress. And trust me, I’ve tried them all. My favorite tool in the defense against chronic pain? Crystals, obviously. For this week’s magickal musing, I want to dive into five crystals that I use to manage my own chronic illness and pain. I’m not saying crystals can solve all of your spoonie problems, because trust me, I’ve tried that. But they can absolutely help pave the way for your health journey to go a little smoother. As a witch with a chronic illness, I’ve found crystals to be an invaluable tool when it comes to managing my flares and healing from the emotional distress that comes with a mysterious illness. Small disclaimer -- The crystals I’ve picked out below are to be used in conjunction with your regular routine, not as a substitute. Always, always, always listen to the advice of your doctor...unless they’re a total jerk who dismisses your pain, in which case you should kick them and seek out a professional who understands what you’re going through. With all of that out of the way, here are my five favorite crystals for spoonies living with chronic illness:
A natural favorite, amethyst is a crystal that I always have on hand. And honestly, is there ever such a thing as too much amethyst? Overall, amethyst has been used by ancient healers to strengthen the immune system and has been revered for its ability to relieve physical, emotional, and psychological pain. It’s a well-rounded and versatile healing crystal that can help with built-up tension, soothing irritability, and dispelling anxiety. If you’re a part of the chronic illness community, you know just how much we need those anti-anxiety vibes. Amethyst is particularly helpful for headaches, specifically dark amethyst which can be used to fight migraines. My illness gives me migraines all of the time, so it’s rare that you’ll ever see me without one. I eventually bought a ring made with a raw chunk of dark amethyst that I can wear when out and about so that I can easily rub it on my temples when those nasty headaches hit. Chevron amethyst is another helpful healer in this family, especially when placed near or directly onto the pain source. I have a small piece that I like to wrap over my wrist when I have joint pain.
Bloodstone is a necessity in my daily life and is a wonderful stone for calming and encouraging patience with yourself. Living with a chronic illness of any kind takes a lot of patience, whether you’re waiting for your diagnosis or just trying to make it through the day. That’s where bloodstone comes in to save the day. It reduces the impatience you have with your body and its symptoms so that you can live in the moment and appreciate the things that are working for you. It can also revitalize the mind and clear brain fog, helping you to see more clearly and rejuvenating your body if you’ve been pushing it a little too far. Which, let’s be honest, most of us are.
This crystal has also been used for centuries as an energy cleanser and blood fortifier. This makes it ideal for those who have anemia or blood disorders. I use my bloodstone (along with daily iron supplements) to chase away the exhaustion that comes from low iron levels. It’s also an especially helpful stone for those who are recovering from surgery or undergoing cancer treatment.
This crystal is good for relieving general aches and pains, making it one of the most versatile stones next to crystal quartz. Rose Quartz uses the energy of water and unconditional love to help you understand situations from a more positive perspective so you can “go with the flow”. I know, that’s hard AF to do when you’re dealing with a chronic illness but believe me, this crystal really helps with those days where you just can’t see the bright side. It’s an amazing, calming crystal that can reassure you after a trauma or health crisis. In physical healing, rose quartz has been traditionally used to strengthen weak heart muscles and improve circulation, as well as to calm an irregular or fast heartbeat due to anxiety. I’ve found that rose quartz is especially helpful for times when I get vertigo, or when I’m having chest and trigger point pain. For instance, when I’m having a flare and my trigger points are flaring up, I like to put my rose quartz in the freezer and then massage it onto the areas that are giving me trouble. The cold doesn’t bother my skin sensitivity as much as hot does, I get a nice mini-massage, and the rose quartz gets the chance to transmute that pain into positivity.
I was actually introduced to this crystal through our resident kitchen witch, who regularly used it in her communication spells. Once I got my hands on it, I knew it was going to be an amazing addition to my chronic illness toolbox. Chrysocolla is calming and helps with nervous disorders, such as anxiety and depression, which are common among those of us with chronic illness or difficult health journeys. We often struggle with feeling unheard or misunderstood, and honestly there’s no better crystal than Chrysocolla to help with those emotions. Physically, Chrysocolla aids the digestion system, eases muscle cramps, and can help with problems associated with arthritis and rheumatism. As the traditional stone of monks and hermits, it can get rid of the anxiety and depression that comes with seclusion. This is especially important to those in the chronic illness community who feel isolated within their health journey and frustrated when they’re unable to do the things they used to. To a Fibro Spoonie like myself, Chrysocolla is basically the holy grail of crystals.
And finally, we have the beautiful blue healing light of Kyanite, often known as “the healer’s stone”. Most people don’t even know they have blockages in their aura that are bringing them down, but this crystal can help protect your aura from negative energy that could be impacting your physical health! Kyanite will shine a light on those hard-to-see blockages and disperse them so that you can absorb the pure healing energy you need. Kyanite can be placed on the area that is in pain to ease discomfort and rebalances your energy so that your pain can be transmuted. The very best thing about Kyanite is that it doesn’t absorb negative energy, so it doesn’t need to be cleansed. I know, it’s pretty much perfect. I’d be remiss if I didn’t bring up Kyanite’s ability to help those of us with a chronic illness to overcome a victim mentality. This crystal aids us in staying strong and seeing the gifts that our illness has given us instead of focusing on what it has taken away. Kyanite can break down your previous perspective and make way for new energy to flow through, creating a shift in your perception of chronic illness.
I hope you’ve enjoyed this peek into the crystals I use to manage my chronic illness! The list could go on and on, but keep in mind that even though these crystals work well with my Fibro, your intuition and illness is your best guide. I highly encourage you to just play with a bunch of crystals and see how they feel. You’ll eventually find the right combo to help with your pain, so pay close attention to how each crystal makes you feel and which ones you’re drawn to intuitively. Let me know which crystals work best for you!
